Before you use new BP-308 CANON battery for the first time you must charge it full. Please note that for new rechargeable CANON camcorder batteries, it is necessary to cycle them at least three times or more before they reach peak performance and capacity. Using BP-308 CANON batteries for the first several times, you may find that they run down (discharge) quickly during using. Don't worry, this is normal until the batteries actually form up. No memory effect. Rechargeable even if it has not been used up yet.
It is important to condition (full discharge and then full charge) the BP-308 battery every two to three weeks. Failure to do so may significantly shorten the camcorder battery's life (this does not apply to Li-Ion batteries, which do not require conditioning). To discharge, simply run the device under the camcorder battery's power until it shuts down or until you get a low battery warning. Then recharge the battery as instructed in the user's manual.
If the BP-308 CANON battery is not in use for a month or longer, recommend to remove it from the device and store in a cool, dry, clean place.
