The Amazon Kindle 3<\/a> (also known as the Kindle Keyboard) has a unique charm. Released in 2010, it featured a 6-inch E Ink Pearl display, a physical keyboard and optional 3G connectivity. At the time, it was an impressive e-reader that earned a high rating of 9\/10 from Wired magazine.<\/p>\n\n\n

But it is now 2026. The obvious question then is: should you still buy one today?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kindle 3 Still Has One Major Strength<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For reading books, the Kindle 3 remains surprisingly comfortable. Its 6-inch screen is compact, the E Ink display is easy on the eyes, and the physical page-turn buttons feel great to use. The keyboard also comes in handy when searching for titles or taking notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has no touchscreen, no app store and no fancy animations \u2013 but that can actually be a benefit. The Kindle 3 is a distraction-free device that lets you focus entirely on reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem lies in everything beyond the reading experience itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its 600\u00d7800 resolution display falls far short of today’s 300 ppi Kindle screens. It lacks a built-in front light, meaning you need an external light source to read at night. The hardware is outdated, rendering performance noticeably sluggish, and both battery life and connectivity fall well short of modern Kindle models. Amazon’s current software support pages are also primarily focused on newer generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kindle 3 vs Modern Kindles<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Amazon’s latest Kindle line-up has moved far beyond the original Kindle philosophy. The latest Kindle Scribe range includes a redesigned third-generation Kindle Scribe, the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, and a Kindle Scribe without a backlight. The Scribe lineup now features an 11-inch 300 ppi display, USB-C ports, a premium stylus that never needs charging, and snappier performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, the latest Scribe is not a direct replacement for the Kindle 3. It serves as both a high-end digital notebook and an e-reader, with the non-backlit version starting at around $430.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For readers who simply want to enjoy novels, a standard new Kindle or Kindle Paperwhite is a much wiser choice. The newer Kindle offers crisp 300 ppi text, a built-in front light, a touchscreen, a USB-C port, and proper software support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, Is the Kindle 3 Still Worth Buying Today?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Unless you find one for next to nothing, I would not recommend using it as your primary Kindle in 2026. To save a bit of money, you sacrifice front-lighting, screen clarity, modern connectivity, speed, and long-term software support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kindle 3<\/a> remains a masterpiece in the history of e-readers. It is a brilliant reminder of just how far the Kindle has come over the years. Buy one for its physical keyboard and retro charm.
