Leica BP-SCL6 vs. BP-SCL4: Is the Extra Battery Life Worth the Switch?

Posted on May 26, 2026

The Leica BP-SCL6 is a rechargeable lithium-ion battery tailored specifically for the Leica Q3 compact digital camera. It also serves as a high-performance power source for several other Leica cameras, delivering extended battery life for photographers who demand reliability during long shooting sessions.

Key Specifications

  • Voltage: 7.2V
  • Capacity: 2,200 mAh
  • Design: Shares the identical dimensions and geometry as its predecessor, allowing for a direct, seamless fit without any modifications
  • Charging: Fully compatible with the Leica BC-SCL4 charger; also supports in-camera USB-C charging on compatible models like the Q3

Compatible Models

The BP-SCL6 is officially compatible with the following camera bodies:

  • Leica Q3 (Native compatibility)
  • Leica Q2 and Q2 Monochrom
  • Leica SL2 and SL2-S
  • Leica SL3

It integrates seamlessly with these cameras, unlocking full performance capabilities on newer bodies.

BP-SCL6 vs. BP-SCL4

Compared to the previous-generation BP-SCL4, the BP-SCL6 introduces several significant upgrades:

  • Higher Capacity: 2,200 mAh versus 1,860 mAh, delivering an approximate 18% boost in battery life on compatible cameras.
  • Enhanced Performance: Users get noticeably longer shooting sessions, making it ideal for travel, event photography, or extended video shoots.
  • Full Feature Support: In the Q3 and SL3, the BP-SCL6 unlocks all drive modes and advanced video options (including higher resolutions and frame rates)—features that are limited or completely unavailable when using the older BP-SCL4.
  • Identical Footprint: The BP-SCL6 maintains the exact physical dimensions of the BP-SCL4, meaning no adjustments are needed for grips or camera bags.

While the older BP-SCL4 can still be used as a backup battery in the Q3 and SL3 for basic still photography, its lower power output will restrict continuous shooting speeds and certain video formats. The BP-SCL6 eliminates these compromises, succeeding the BP-SCL4 as the definitive solution for Leica’s latest mirrorless and compact cameras.
