Qualcomm has announced Quick Charge 5+, the first major update to its fast-charging standard since Quick Charge 5 launched in 2020.
While the original version delivered support for 100W+ charging and the ability to charge a 4,500mAh battery to 50% in just five minutes, the new upgrade focuses less on speed and more on efficiency and heat management.
Quick Charge 5+ is designed to reduce overheating by adapting charging behavior to real-world conditions. It uses lower voltages at higher currents, up to 20V at 7A, which Qualcomm says helps to minimize heat generation. This should improve comfort for users charging while gaming or multitasking, while also supporting better long-term battery health by reducing stress on the cell during recharges.
The new standard maintains the same peak speeds as Quick Charge 5, but with improved thermal performance. Importantly, it is backwards compatible with nearly all previous Quick Charge versions, excluding only Quick Charge 1.0 devices. This compatibility extends across both devices and accessories, ensuring widespread adoption.
Quick Charge 5+ will also support upcoming products expected to debut at the Snapdragon Summit in the coming weeks.
