The iPhone 17 introduces a new video feature called Dual Capture, which enables simultaneous recording with the front and rear cameras. The feature automatically produces picture-in-picture videos and is included across all models in the iPhone 17 series, including the iPhone Air.
Dual Capture is integrated directly into the Camera app. To activate it, users open the app, select Video mode, tap the menu in the upper-right corner, and choose “Dual Capture.” After the first use, a picture-in-picture icon appears in the interface, allowing quick activation or deactivation without reopening the menu.

In Dual Capture mode, several controls are available. On the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, users can switch between the 48 MP main camera, 48 MP ultrawide, and 48 MP telephoto during recording without interrupting the video. The smaller preview window from the front camera can be repositioned on the display, though any adjustments are saved directly in the final video.
The feature supports video recording at 1080p or 4K, with frame rates of 24 or 30 fps. For post-production, 4K at 30 fps offers the highest flexibility.
Dual Capture has some limitations. The layout is fixed, with the rear camera as the main view and the front camera in a smaller overlay. Options such as split-screen or swapping the video sources are not available. Additionally, recordings are saved as a single file, without separate clips for each camera, which reduces editing flexibility.
