Because Dell has not released another XPS detachable since, the pre-owned market has become the sole purchasing route for anyone wanting to experience this specific hardware setup in 2026.
Hardware configuration and initial experience
From a pure hardware standpoint, it displayed impressive industrial design and competitive strength upon release. The device features a 13-inch 3:2 2.8K IPS touchscreen protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, boasting a peak brightness of 500 nits and stylus support, making it well-suited for reading documents and light content creation.
Under the hood, it houses a 12th-Gen Intel Core i5-1230U or i7-1250U processor paired with a fanless cooling design, ensuring whisper-quiet operation. With the tablet weighing around 750 grams and the keyboard cover adding roughly 540 grams, along with dual Thunderbolt 4 ports and Wi-Fi 6E, it earned plenty of praise for its superior typing feel and portability when competing against the Surface Pro 8 at the time.
Performance bottlenecks and computational shortfalls
However, times have changed, and viewing it from the perspective of 2026 reveals internals that struggle to hide their age. While the 12th-Gen Alder Lake-U chip paired with 16 GB of memory can still handle multi-tab web browsing, Office software, and Zoom meetings smoothly, it falls far behind recent ultrabooks under sustained heavy workloads and completely lacks an NPU processing unit required for running local Copilot+ features.
Furthermore, because both the memory and the SSD are soldered directly onto the board with no upgrade path whatsoever, older models configured with only 8 GB of memory are entirely unviable in today’s software environment.

At the same time, the 60 Hz refresh rate feels somewhat sluggish alongside modern 120 Hz screens. Combined with restrictive keyboard stand angles, the absence of a headphone jack, and accumulated wear on the touchscreen and hinges, the overall experience has steadily fallen behind.
Second-hand market and buying advice
Regarding pricing and value for money, “new old stock” units listed at over 1,000 dollars represent very poor value. Based on 2026 second-hand market rates, a well-preserved unit with 16 GB of memory, a 512 GB SSD, and good battery health should reasonably fetch between 300 and 600 dollars.
Yet if you are looking for long battery life, AI capabilities, a 120 Hz high refresh rate screen, or a device that will last reliably for several more years, paying a premium for an old device carrying the hardware constraints of 2022 is hardly a sensible choice.
